So, what do you think is the cheapest grocery store? Here's what other shoppers had to say!

There are many reasons we each have our go-to grocery store—from a convenient location to the fresh produce or friendly cashiers. But when it comes right down to it, lower prices might be the best way to win our hearts. After all, we’re always looking for tricks to save money on groceries.

The Most Budget-Friendly Place to Shop: Aldi

So what grocery chain offers shoppers the best value? Using public financial data and a survey of about 10,000 American grocery shoppers, the Dunnhumby study found 10 “Winners in Price.” The leader is—not surprisingly—Aldi!

The chain keeps things simple. In general, Aldi stores are smaller, private label products are low-cost and customers even bring their own bags. (See all the reasons why Aldi’s groceries are so cheap.) Despite that, the store manages to carry staples, snacks, home goods and seasonal items—as well as gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free products. This is Aldi’s sixth win from Dunnhumby.

For the 10th year running, Aldi was also crowned the Value Leader in 2020, according to the Market Force Information® Grocery Benchmark Study and PR Newswire. The study surveyed thousands of shoppers, and the unanimous agreement was that Aldi doled out the best shopper experience, fastest checkout speed and ranked highly for cleanliness, convenience and value. A 2019 study conducted by Kanter dubbed Aldi “more cost-effective” than other grocery chains. Hooray, Aldi!

Here’s the full list of winners in price:

1. Aldi

With Aldi’s no-frills approach and great shopping experience, it’s a no-brainer why they’re number one. Aldi currently has more than 2,200 stores across 39 states, but if you still don’t have an Aldi near you don’t despair! The German chain plans to become the third-largest grocery retailer in the U.S by the end of the year.

2. WinCo

WinCo stores are found along the West Coast and in the Midwest. The warehouse-like locations have a straightforward feel where—like at Aldi—customers bag their own groceries. It’s a great store to shop for your normal grocery needs, plus the store offers bulk bins where you can get items like nuts, beans and more. However, what truly makes them stand out is that they’re open 24/7 (except certain holidays).

3. Grocery Outlet

Grocery Outlet is an East and West Coast bargain store that offers groceries for 40-70% less than competing stores. They’re able to offer such low prices by having expert buyers travel and find the best deals all around the world. The best thing is, each store location is specifically tailored to hold products that are popular to its surrounding community, keeping the customers’ interest a priority. They’re a great place to go when you’re looking for a special find.

4. Market Basket

Market Basket is a family-owned Northeastern chain, known for its low prices. According to Boston.com, Market Basket has been able to keep their prices low by staying away from debt, promoting within their workforce and buying their products in large bulks. The store owners recommend trying out their fresh bakery items or grabbing a quick meal from their deli.

5. Food4Less

Food4Less stores are in California, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Food4Less is another no-frills chain where they save on costs by having the customers bag their own groceries. (Are we seeing a theme here?) They’re a popular place to go for quality food at low costs.

6. Lidl

Lidl is (like Aldi) a German company that’s primarily located on the East Coast. Following a similar approach to Aldi, they keep their products at low costs by keeping their products in the delivery cartons they came in, keeping staff minimal and sticking to private-label brands. The discount supermarket chain is planning to open more new stores in the United States, so keep an eye out for one near you!

7. Save-a-Lot

You’ll be able to find these discount stores in 32 states across America. Save-a Lot is similar to Aldi in that they’re able to save money by keeping their space small. With their stores only at 15,000 square feet this allows customers to get in and out quickly with their low-priced groceries. Following the same inventory tactics as Grocery Outlet, each store’s products differ depending on the community the store is located in, so it’s a perfect place to go to get items catered for you.

8. Price Rite

Price Rite currently has 32 stores located on the East Coast. They’re a company that follows the tactics of offering limited-assortments in order to save money, but they have a much larger space compared to Aldi and Save-a-Lot. The company prides itself on providing produce and meat at unbelievable prices and ensuring customers will be able to find name brand products for 20-50% less than their competitors.

9. Walmart

Walmart is one of the most popular grocery retailers in the nation and can be found just about anywhere. According to Business Insider, having a mass amount of store locations and keeping their operation costs minimal helps the company save money and put it towards their low prices instead. It’s shoppers favorite place to go for the lowest prices on groceries and household essentials.

10. Marc’s

This discount store is currently only available in Northern and Central Ohio. Marc’s credits their ability to keep prices low by having a large store volume of customers visiting their stores everyday. They are also able to cut costs by being a self-service store, where customers bag and ring themselves out at self-checkout lanes. Proudly known for their closeouts section, customers can find the best buys from around the world in these departments.
