Highlights
Air Temperatures by Region in San Diego
San Diego is known worldwide for having great weather and a big part of that is its temperate climate, complete with comfortable temperatures in all areas year-round.
Unlike other regions of the US, San Diego experiences very little in the way of harsh weather or highly variable air temperatures. Its consistently warm, sunny weather makes it a popular destination spot year-round, as even in the winter months, it’s rarely cold enough for jackets and scarves.
The whole region is blessed with a climate that rarely experiences extremes of temperature, although inland areas can experience hot spells during the summer months.
Temperatures can reach highs of over 100 degrees in the summer months in the desert and just below 40 degrees at night in the winter months. Primarily in the transition, mountain and desert areas, you can expect relatively mild temperatures in the 60s and 70s to be available almost any time of the year for your visit to San Diego.
Coastal Region Air Temperature
Sunny Day at Windansea Beach
Year-round maximum temperatures range from the high 60s to the 70s in August and September. With the ocean nearby, beachgoers will be comfortable even during the warmest months, as the coast almost never gets warmer than 80 degrees.
The ocean breeze tends to keep San Diego’s coast a bit cooler than its inland regions. With fewer buildings to block the breeze and more exposure to winds coming in from the Pacific Ocean, vacationing on the coast is most enjoyable during summertime. Still, temperatures rarely drop below the low 50s in winter.

Mountain Region Air Temperature
We love the Julian Beer Co for its food and beer!
With the increase in elevation, the mountain area in and around Julian has some of the widest range of temperature variance in all of San Diego. There’s plenty of heat, with highs for the year averaging 86 degrees in the summer months of July and August and average low temperatures dipping just below 40s in the winter months of December, January and February.
San Diego’s mountains are also one of the few places where snowfall occurs during the winter! While it’s very rare for most of Southern California to experience a white Christmas, precipitation isn’t nearly as uncommon at higher elevations.
To have the best chance at experiencing a snowy day in San Diego, visit during January or February, though occasional snow showers have been recorded in March.
