I have a stock 1995 325is and i found a chip and intake setup that adds around 30 hp. I was just wondering if 30 hp would make a large difference because im unhappy with the stock m50b25, i just need more power. Thanks

30hp will feel really nice, but a chip and intake wont get you anywhere near that... sorry.
I would reccomend a m52b28 swap with a intake chip and your current m50 manifold. That might get you 30hp

30hp would definitely make a difference ... think about it: the difference between a 325 and US spec M3 is less than 50 ...
As for the chip and intake adding 30 ... yeah, maybe 8-10, if that. Trust me, driven plenty of chipped BMWs ... yes, you can feel the difference, but no, it wont make a slow car fast.

Just remember most of that extra HP is generated at 5000 rpm and up. Think how often you drive like that.

You got to remember that Turner made these chips some 16-17 years ago on NEW cars. Your car now is 16-17 years old .. results will not be the same. Get some cams first, then get the chip & pulleys. ?It wouldn't shock me to find that the chip alone just restores your lost power & widens the power band a little.Originally Posted by BMW325issport

That "power" is most noticed in your wallet. Trust me.

Bahaha 30hp gain with intake upgrade plus chip program, hahaha. First BMW stock air box is not restrictive at all for 2.5L engine. It is not even restrictive for 3.2L. Stock ecu program is also done well by BMW, they don't leave much room.Best thing you can do to feel more power is strip the interior, reduce the weight, you will get more power to weight ratio and you will defenetly feel lighter car with more power.

your most cost effective solution to increase power without f/i is to engine swap. either get an s50, or swap out the rotating assembly on your m50 from that of an m54, which would basically give you ~s50 performance with a lower cost. those engines share the same crankshaft. search 's50 clone' for more info. but the performance / $ margin for cam sets and chips are not that great, and if you have to pay someone else to install them i'd say it's even less so.if you've got a clean chassis, i'd save your money for now and upgrade your suspension. a little tlc goes a long way in that area.

False. HP is Torque x RPM. Saving the world from bad physics one thread at a timeOriginally Posted by JCooper
Yes & No! The torque difference is what you really feel/want to focus on! HP is just torque applied over time.

It's an ideal claim, not taking anything away from Turner they're a great company and race team. That is also not power to the wheels, totally different argument about dyno's and such.Originally Posted by BMW325issport

For the same money, ~$400 you can get a closer ratio differential. Better bang for the buck. Doesn't increase power but the shortened gears will allow for better acceleration at the expense of top speed.

False.Power
is equal to torque multiplied by angular velocity multiplied by 2 times pi.HP (which by the way is simply a unit for measuring power) is equal to torque (lb. ft.) multiplied by angular velocity (RPM) multiplied by 2 times pi, all divided by 33,000.

Sorry, I realize my mistake now haha, I was just on my phone app at the time and way to lazy with my keypad to put in all the exact units. Guess a Mech. Engineering degree gets you plenty of science but no motivation lolOriginally Posted by Curtis328

No worries. I've had my Mech. Eng. degree for two years now, so I'm getting a bit rusty on the theory, but I knew that was wrong.
Cheers.

The 2 best NA mods on the 325/328 is a cam & diff swap. Find a 3:15, 3:23 or if you get lucky 3:38 lsd, some cams and you will feel the difference from stock. Modding these cars is not expensive if you know what your doing & spend money on things that make a difference. Now these two mods will not transform the car into a Bugatti SS but it will make the car more enjoyable.

power to weight ratio has my vote. If you can add a little power and take away weight your further ahead... ask any lotus driver

M50 has crap torque compared to all other US straight-6's for the E36
If you can, save up for a swap or buy S50 cams or S52 cams w/trays, chip, electric fan, and a good header/midpipe combo. That should give it more 'pick-up'
I think M52's & S52's have more potential to make more power.
