Press release prepared by: Sergeant Gene Wong
The Police Department would like to remind drivers to park on the right side of the street. It is against state law to park on the wrong side of a two way street facing oncoming traffic. When drivers park on the wrong side of the street, they have to drive head-on into oncoming traffic. They also have a hard time seeing approaching vehicles when they pull out from the wrong side of the street, because they are seated in their vehicle closer to the curb than the roadway. This all increases the chance of being involved in a traffic collision.
The Police Department is starting an education campaign in March and will issue public safety announcements on San Bruno Cable, the City website’s homepage and social media. The Police Department will also be handing out warning notices to vehicles that are parked on the wrong side of the street. Afterwards, the Police Department will begin a city-wide parking enforcement campaign for vehicles parked on the wrong side of the street in April. Vehicles parked on the wrong side of the street are subject to a $50 fine.
Please help keep San Bruno safe by parking on the right side of the street!
California Vehicle Code 22502(a) Summary
A vehicle stopped or parked upon a two-way roadway with adjacent curbs shall be stopped or parked with the right-hand wheels of the vehicle parallel to, and within 18 inches of, the right-hand curb. If there are no curbs or barriers, right-hand parallel parking is required unless otherwise indicated. Motorcycles shall be parked with at least one wheel or fender touching the right-hand curb or edge.
