Gary Westermann, 43, formerly of 1304 Elm West Springfield, pleaded guilty in Hampden Superior Court to five charges of larceny over $250 and was sentenced 43-year-old West Springfield man he is 55. by Judge Mary-Lou Rup. Upon completion of his prison sentence, Westermann is to spend seven years on probation. "He will be under supervision until the age of 55 or so," said Assistant District Attorney Charles Dolan. "If he violates his probation, he's exposing himself to sentences of 15 to 25 years." Westermann has been behind bars for more than a year of a sentence of five to six years for stealing computers, furniture and cleaning products from a trailer at a Westfield freight terminal in May 1996.

The larceny sentence will be served concurrently with the theft sentence. Westermann spent nine years in prison after pleading guilty on Sept. 30, 1988, to participating in a conspiracy to move cocaine from Florida for re-sale in Western Mas.sachusetts. Dolan said, that Westermann and an unknown accomplice stole $415 worth of clothing from Filene's at the Holyoke Mall on Jan. 29, 1997; a bicycle valued at more than $250 from Bob's Bike Shop in East Longmeadow on Oct.

School Committee Vice Chairman John R. Hine told the board Tuesday the committee wants to hire a replacement for Interim Superintendent James E. Tierney by July 1.

He said the search will take about 4 to 6 months. Both the New England School Development Council and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees want the consultant's job. Although the School Committee could do the job on its own, Tierney said the board has used consultants in the past because the job is not easy. "It's a very long and involved process which requires a lot of work and a lot of screening. It's much better done by someone who does it all the time," Tierney said.

Dolan said when state police raided Westermann's home on July 16, 1997, they found marijua, na and materials used to create false identification cards. The prosecutor said Westermann and a woman, Jennifer Newmaker, would use the identities to estabi lish lines of credit under false names and leave with goods purchased with newly-obtained credit cards.

Westermann's lawyer, Roy Anderson, said that upon completion of his term, Westermann intends to move to the South where family members have been successful in a real estate venture. The Massachusetts Association of School Committees has helped the town with a previous superintendent search. Tierney, said that during the meeting, both organizations will probably provide the committee with a list of superintendents they have placed in other communities. The cost of hiring a consultant has not been disclosed. In other business, the School Committee decided not to evaluate its special education program at this time because of the $15,000 cost involved, according to Tier- ney.

Hine said Tierney was directed to contact other school districts that had evaluations to find out if they are pleased with the results. Tierney said a special education evaluation may happen next year" "Even though things are going well in special education, (the committee) still feels strongly about having an evaluation," Tierney said. The proposal to conduct an evaluation of the special education program was made by committee member Robert L. Gouin. Winter by SPECIAL SAVINGS 5,000 SQ.FT.
